Shungite is primarily found in the Karelia region of Russia, particularly near the village of Shunga, which is where the stone gets its name. The most significant deposit is located in the Zazhoginsky mine in the Lake Onega area of Karelia. This region holds the largest and most famous deposits of shungite, known for its high quality and unique properties.
